The synonyms tool allows you to add synonyms to your site’s search function. When you create a synonym, you connect it to another search word. When a user performs a search with the synonym, they will receive the results for the search word that correspond to that synonym. After you have spent time optimizing a search word, if you create a robust group of synonyms for that word, each of those synonyms will also benefit from your optimization. Synonyms can be an important factor in helping your users find what they are looking for. Oftentimes, search users may use a variety of terminology when searching for the same thing- for example, when looking for a "car" a visitor might type in "automobile" or "vehicle" instead. However, you still want to direct those users to the same set of pages for all these keywords.
The main synonyms screen contains a searchable table that displays all synonyms that you have created and the other search word to which each synonym corresponds. To delete a synonym from the table, hover your cursor over a row on the table and click the trash button that appears.
To create a misspelling, click the “New” button in the upper-right corner of the main synonyms screen.
When you click the "New" button, an overlay appears that has two text fields—one for a synonym (top) one for the primary word that the synonym correspond to (bottom).
After inserting a word into each text box, click the “Create” button at the bottom of the screen to create your synonym. You can create multiple synonyms for the same primary word; however, each synonym requires its own entry.
