The synonyms tool allows you to add synonyms to your site’s search function. When you create a synonym, you connect it to other search words. When a user performs a search with the synonym, they will receive the results for the search word that corresponds to that synonym.
Synonyms can be an important factor in helping your users find what they are looking for. Often, search users may use a variety of terminology when searching for the same thing; for example, when looking for information on "recycling", a visitor might type in "trash" or "garbage" instead. However, you still want to direct those users to the same set of pages for all these keywords.
*Synonyms are specific to the language and will affect all engines.
Creating a synonym
The main synonyms screen contains a searchable table that displays all synonyms that you have created and the other search words to which each synonym corresponds.
To create a synonym, click the “New” button in the upper-right corner of the main synonyms screen.
When you click the "New" button, an overlay appears. You can create multiple synonyms to be triggered by each other.
After entering your synonyms, added separately by clicking the '+' button, click the “Create” button at the bottom of the screen to create your synonym.
Please note: Synonyms do not apply to page rankings, banners, or quicklinks.
Deleting a synonym
To delete a synonym from the table, hover your cursor over a row on the table and click the trash button that appears.
You can also delete multiple at a time by selecting the synonyms using the boxes to the right and selecting the trash can on the top right of the table.
